The real work happens with AI now — in a window only you can see. Drafts, decisions, analysis. And then getting any of it in front of another person is still copy-paste, by hand, every time.

I want to describe the seam precisely, because it is easy to mistake for a minor annoyance and it is not one.

Where does AI work actually die?

Not in a crash. In the scroll.

You spend forty minutes with an assistant working out a plan. The plan is good. It exists as a long message somewhere around two-thirds of the way down a conversation that also contains three abandoned directions and a tangent about pricing.

A week later you need it. You remember having it. You do not remember which conversation, and search returns four near-identical threads.

Meanwhile the person the plan was for has never seen it, because getting it to them means you deciding to ferry it — opening a doc, pasting, cleaning up the formatting, adding the two sentences of context that make it legible to someone who was not in the conversation.

The work is done. The delivery is entirely manual, and it is on you every single time. That is the seam. You are the transport layer between your AI and everyone else.

Why doesn't a shared doc fix it?

I used to think it did. It does not, and the reason is worth being precise about, because it decides what an actual fix has to look like.

A shared doc solves location. Everyone can now reach the thing. That is real, and it is why the workaround is so common — pasting into Notion or a Google Doc is not stupid, it works, and if location were the whole problem the problem would already be solved.

But watch what happens next. Your colleague opens the doc, feeds it to their own assistant, asks for a tightening, pastes the result back. Now the doc has two authors and one of them is a model, and nothing in the doc records that. Do it four more times over three weeks and you have a document nobody can vouch for, sitting in a place everybody can reach.

Location was never the hard part. The hard part is that nothing remembers, so a person has to. And once more than one person and more than one model are involved, no person can.

Chat — a reply that lands as a file, not as scrollback.

Same conversation. One difference: the reply becomes a file, in a shared workspace, at the moment it is produced — not later, not if you remember, not after you clean it up.

Three consequences follow, and they are more than they look:

The output has an address. You link it instead of finding it. Next week's search is a path, not an archaeology dig through four threads.

Your colleague can open it without you. They did not have to be in the conversation and you did not have to decide to ferry it. The delivery step disappears rather than getting faster.

And the next session — yours, theirs, a different model's — starts from the file. The context is not in anyone's chat memory. It is written down where every participant can read it, which is the only arrangement that survives more than one participant.

What you stop doing

You stop being the index of which conversation holds the good version.

You stop re-explaining the constraint you explained on Monday, because it is in the file and the assistant reads the file.

You stop the little ceremony of copy, paste, reformat, add-context, send — which takes four minutes and happens eleven times a week and never once felt worth automating.

If any of that sounds like your Tuesday, the diagnosis is not that you need a better prompt or a tidier folder structure. It is that the room where you do your best work has one door, and you are it.

What it doesn't fix

It does not make the AI right. A file that lands with a name on it can still be wrong, and now it is wrong somewhere your colleague can find it.

That is a real trade and I would rather state it than sell past it. What changes is not correctness but reviewability: a wrong file with an author and a diff is something you can catch, argue with, and fix once. A wrong paragraph buried in a conversation two-thirds of the way down is something you discover in a meeting six weeks later.

It also does not remove the judgment step. Somebody still decides what is worth keeping. The seam this closes is delivery, not discernment — and anyone promising the second one is selling something I have not seen work.
